6 Growing Trends In Distance Learning

by SUMMIT on September 23rd, 2014

Distance learning is one of the most innovative technologies to emerge in recent years. Because of its effectiveness, distance learning is on the rise: according to EdTech Magazine, between 1998 and 2008 there has been a 150% increase in the amount of students taking distance learning classes as a part of their standard curriculum. There are a few growing trends in distance learning that are poised to have a huge impact on the field of education.

More Robust Learning Platforms

Tools such as Blackboard are allowing educators to post new lessons, send out course-wide messages, or comment on the work of their students very easily. These platforms are providing a highly effective way for students to not only receive the materials they need to have for distance learning, but also to engage with these materials again as they look to reinforce the lessons they learn from their courses.

Growth In Developing Countries

In areas where learning is limited by a lack of available resources, distance learning is even more important. In a report by Hanover, a Washington, D.C. research firm, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of South Africa stated that Africa has the biggest demand for higher education with the smallest domestic capability to deliver it. The good news, however, is that local government support may help encourage higher education and distance learning in Africa. Indeed, as technology develops and gets less expensive, more and more learning institutions in developing countries will begin to capitalize on the convenience of distance learning.

MOOCs

MOOCs, or massive open online courses, are another one of the growing trends in distance learning. Through MOOCs, students from around the world can participate in college-level courses at no cost. MOOCs are a very progressive form of distance learning that allow many different people to get education, even if they do not have the resources necessary to take classes at a local institution.

Use By Military Personnel

One of the most common applications for distance learning is for those in the military. Soldiers that are stationed in foreign locations still have a desire to learn when they aren’t fulfilling their duties to their country. Many institutions are rolling out programs that are specifically designed to allow military members to learn while on deployment.

Making The Globe Smaller

Collaboration on an international level is critical for the success of the world. One of the growing trends in distance learning is international communication: professionals and organizations can learn about concepts and ideas that are affecting the world at large. This trend will help form more cohesive partnerships between countries that want to team up to address world issues.

Healthcare Applications

Healthcare is a field where learning needs to take place constantly. Patients need to learn about their own health, while doctors and providers need to be able to learn about new techniques in their field. Distance learning makes this kind of education less expensive and more convenient, which will help healthcare providers improve their skills.

Be on the look out for these six growing trends in distance learning, especially if they may impact your life in any way.
